An energy-aware dynamic RWA framework for next-generation wavelength-routed networks

چکیده
Power demand in networking equipment is expected to become a main limiting factor and hence a fundamental challenge to ensure bandwidth scaling in the next generation Internet. Environmental effects of human activities, such as CO2 emissions and the consequent global warming have risen as one of the major issue for the ICT sector and for the society. Therefore, it is not surprising that telecom operators are devoting much of their efforts to the reduction of energy consumption and of the related CO2 emissions of their network infrastructures. In this work, we present a novel integrated routing and wavelength assignment framework that, while addressing the traditional network management objectives, introduces energy-awareness in its decision process to contain the power consumption of the underlying network infrastructure and make use of green energy sources wherever possible. This approach results in direct power, cost and CO2 emissions savings in the short term, as demonstrated by our extensive simulation studies. 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Dynamic Routing and Wavelength Assignment with Backward Reservation in Wavelength-routed Multifiber WDM Networks
In wavelength-routed WDM networks, blocking probability of lightpath establishments is generally high due to coarse granularity and wavelength continuity constraint. Therefore, blocking of lightpath establishments is one of crucial issues which must be resolved. Multifiber environments reduce blocking probability of lightpath establishments because each link consists of multiple fibers and mult...
متن کاملINVESTIGATION OF PHYSICALLY AWARE ROUTING AND WAVELENGTH ASSIGNMENT (RWA) ALGORITHMS FOR NEXT GENERATION TRANSPARENT OPTICAL NETWORKS by
Optical networks form the foundation of today’s information infrastructure. Current generation optical networks consist largely of point-to-point electronically transmitted links which switch between nodes and repeaters. There is a trend in optical networking to move from the current generation opaque networks toward transparent networks. Transparent networks use only optical devices, eliminati...

متن کاملAdaptive Weight Functions for Shortest Path Routing Algorithms for Multi-Wavelength Optical WDM Networks
Optical Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed (DWDM) networks are an attractive candidate for the next generation Internet and beyond. In this paper, we consider the wide area wavelength routed backbone network with circuit-switching. Given a session request, the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem is to calculate a path between two nodes, and also assign a set of wavelengths along ...
متن کاملSignal-Quality Consideration for Dynamic Connection Provisioning in All- Optical Wavelength-Routed Networks
We investigate new connection-provisioning algorithms to efficiently provide signal-quality-guaranteed connections in an all-optical WDM mesh network. In the all-optical network, signal degradations incurred by nonideal transmission medium accumulate along a lightpath. When the signal degradation reaches a certain level, the connection is not usable and is blocked due to transmission impairment...
